چکیده

This paper is concerned with the influence of vocalic context (/ɪ, ʊ/) and prosodic weakening on the production of the German fricatives /s, ʃ/ in two syllable positions and its relation to the frequent sound change from alveolar to post-alveolar fricatives. Previous studies reported coarticulatory influences of vowel context on fricatives and more coarticulation in prosodically weak positions. However, the influence of syllable position is unclear, even though sound change affects more often segments in coda than in onset position. In order to test these factors, acoustic and articulatory data from six German speakers were analysed. They produced lexical words with fricatives in onsets and codas of stressed syllables in accented and deaccented words. The results show a small influence of syllable position on the analysed acoustic and articulatory measurements, with higher spectral centers of gravity and more retracted mean tongue trajectories in coda position.

The interaction of coarticulation and prosody in sound change.

Ohala (1974, 1981a) has proposed that sound changes can originate in hearers' misinterpretations of synchronic phonetic patterns. This paper applies this idea to sound changes that are conditioned by the prosodic environment, such as the voicing of voiceless fricatives in unstressed syllables in Proto-Germanic. Browman and Goldstein's (1989, 1990) "gestural score" suggests a representation of s...

The effect of prosodic weakening on the production and perception of trans-consonantal vowel coarticulation in German.

The present study considers whether coarticulation in production and its relationship to categorization could provide a synchronic basis for the prevalence of sound change in unstressed syllables. The size of V2-on-V1 coarticulation in the production of /pV1pV2l/ non-words (V1 = /U,Y/ and V2 = /e, o/) produced by German speakers and with stress falling either on the first or second syllable was...

Prosodic Boundary Effects on Segment Articulation and V-to-V Coarticulation in Standard Chinese

This paper investigates the prosodic conditioning of the segment production and vowel-to-vowel coarticulation in the Standard Chinese through electropalatographic and acoustic analysis. The articulatory and acoustic measures were obtained for un-aspirated alveolar consonant /t/ and vowels /i/ and /a/. Results show that the domain-initial consonant is strengthened in a hierarchical manner in hig...

Prosodic Structure Affects the Production and Perception of Voice-Assimilated German Fricatives

Prosodic structure has long been known to constrain phonological processes [1]. More recently, it has also been recognized as a source of fine-grained phonetic variation of speech sounds. In particular, segments in domain-initial position undergo prosodic strengthening [2, 3], which also implies more resistance to coarticulation in higher prosodic domains [5]. The present study investigates the...

Production of English Lexical Stress by Persian EFL Learners

This study examines the phonetic properties of lexical stress in English produced by Persian speakers learning English as a foreign language. The four most reliable phonetic correlates of English lexical stress, namely fundamental frequency, duration, intensity, and vowel quality were measured across Persian speakers’ production of the stressed and unstressed syllables of five English disyllabi...
